Diabetes-Free Kids is the first book to address the burgeoning epidemic of type 2 diabetes among children and to provide parents with an action plan for halting it. Exercise physiologist Sheri Colberg and nutritionist Mary Friesz lay out a clear plan for diet and exercise that will get even the pickiest eaters to enjoy healthier yet satisfying meals and snacks, and will motivate the most sedentary children to start moving.

Product Description
A chance to step into your child’s shoes. When your child was diagnosed with diabetes your first priority was probably to learn everything you could about diabetes and how to manage it. Whether your child is a youngster or a teenager, you’ve done your best to help with injections, meals and snacks, and the many other elements of a diabetes management program. But through all this, you may be overlooking the importance of your child’s social and emotional development. Children want to be normal, and diabetes makes them “different.” Many well-meaning parents inadvertently focus too much on their child’s diabetes, and not enough on other aspects of their child’s life. This unique book, written by a young woman who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11, gives you the opportunity to understand and relate to your child’s feelings. Drawing on the author’s own experiences and those of the many children and young adults she’s counseled, this sensitive guide explains:

How children feel when they’re diagnosed
Why diabetes is a bigger adjustment for you than for your child
How to encourage a healthy approach to diabetes
The importance of diabetes education
How to make your child’s life as normal as possible
Dealing with outside forces (school, day care, relatives, etc.)
Eliminating the power struggle for independence in adolescence
• Books to Fund A Cure • A portion of this book’s proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International, a not-for-profit voluntary health agency, whose primary objective is to support and fund research to find the cause, cure, treatment, and prevention of diabetes and its complications. Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Library Health Amazon.com Review
“I am a 21-year-old chiropractic student who has had diabetes for over 10 years,” writes the author, who has been working with children and teenagers with diabetes since she was 15 and founded a camp for young people with diabetes. This slim book is “what children want their parents to know” about dealing with the social and emotional issues of diabetes, a perspective lacking in most books about this condition. For example, “My parents were worried about the long-term impact of diabetes and how it would change my life and my family’s life. I was worried that I wouldn’t [miss] my school field trip.”

McAuliffe teaches parents important concepts like not blaming yourself if your child has diabetes, accepting that your child will have diabetes forever, not transmitting a negative attitude, and letting your child be a “normal” kid. She also teaches strategies for dealing with daily life, such as including siblings in diabetes education and emergency training, educating your child’s teacher and classmates, and giving siblings without diabetes some extra attention. McAuliffe gives no medical advice–plenty of other books do that. She shares from her heart and experience what it was like being a kid with diabetes and how parents can make it easier or more difficult. –Joan Price

Product Description
This book has been designed to help children with diabetes appreciate the importance of taking their insulin injections and being aware of what they eat. Although parents are of course primarily responsible for the care of their child s diabetes, it is important that the children themselves are aware that they too must take some responsibility. This book encourages children to follow the instructions given to them by their doctors and parents, to eat healthily, and to see their insulin injections as something brave that they do, that other children cannot! Instead of viewing diabetes and their daily injections as something negative, the story encourages them to think of it as something that sets them apart from their peers in a positive way.

Diabetes is a disease caused by a failure of the biological mechanisms for regulating blood sugar, due to insufficient of the production of insulin (hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy) by the pancreas. The disease is characterized by a significant increase in blood sugar. Three major types of diabetes are Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.Type 1 diabetes is characterized by a loss of insulin production by particular cells of the pancreas (Beta cells or Langerhans cells. The causes of this loss of insulin production are still unknown. Type 1 diabetes can affect children or adults but, most of times, it starts between few months of life and about 35 years. The organism of a diabetic patient rejects, by the formation of antibodies, cells which are capable of producing insulin. The symptoms are discomfort and frequent urination which can lead to dehydration and weight loss. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 10% of patients with diabetes.Type 2 diabetes or Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a form of diabetes characterized by high levels of sugar in the blood. This type of diabetes results from a lack of insulin secretion and its ineffectiveness to keep the blood sugar within a normal level. Type 2 Diabetes can be caused by genetic factors or unhealthy lifestyle, lack of exercise, obesity, alcohol abuse and high-fat diet. However, the causes of diabetes in the vast majority of cases have not yet any logical explanation.Gestational diabetes mellitus is a type of diabetes that occurs in pregnant women only. No specific cause has been identified, but it is believed that during pregnancy, the body of the mother produces hormones to support the fetus as it grows. In some women, these hormones work against their bodies, making them less able to make the insulin needed to get energy from body cells. Without this insulin, the level of sugar in the mother’s blood starts to build up, which can do harm to both mother and fetus, if left untreated . Gestational diabetes occurs in nearly 7 percent of all pregnancies. Unlike type 1 and type 2 diabetes, Gestational diabetes is often treatable. General signs of type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetesThe symptoms of diabetes may occur in different ways: fatigue, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, intense thirst, frequent urination, insatiable hunger, weight loss, muscle weakness. Some or all of these symptoms are present in patients with diabetes early in the disease. However, some diabetics have few symptoms.
