Kids Who Sleep More Weigh Less & Perform Better Enough Sleep?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 29th, 2008
Parents, are your kids getting enough shut eye? If your young ones dose off enough, they may be able to ward off obesity and even do well in school. Indeed, recent studies reveal that insufficient sleep can lead to obesity, poor eating habits, not enough execise and poor academic performance. In fact, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) urges adolescents to get about nine hours of sleep so they can reach their full potential in both school and their personal lives. “Getting the proper quantity and quality of sleep is just as important as the proper diet in allowing...

Hollywood Cookie Diet: Don’t Fall for Fake Food to Lose Weight

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 29th, 2008
About the only positive things I can say about the much-talked about Hollywood Cookie Diet is that it allows people to conveniently lose weight on the run and it encourages you to fuel up four times before dinner, thereby warding off blood sugar swings --- well, you hope. But, for the most part, I'm appalled by a diet that reveres and idolizes cookies to the tune of 4 of them a day. For starters, in my opinion, most sugar addicts can't limit themselves to one cookie every few hours. Many people find it hard enough to conquer their carb habit...

Couple Arrested for Trafficking Chocolate!

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 27th, 2008
Raw cacao (chocolate) is a pretty innocuous-looking substance, right? Well, apparently not to drug-sniffing dogs and suspicious Canadian border patrol, who mistook the raw food for hashish! You've got to read about this apalling incident, where Ron and Nadine, two innocent people from Living Libations, were arrested, handcuffed, intimidated, threatened and even forcibly removed from their six-old old baby boy. Learn more now. Just read the article by my friend Mike Adams of the amazing website, Natural News. Also, check out the similiar, but a tad more detailed (but short) post on my new, but not yet officially launched blog,...

Howard Stern Show Pokes Fun of Me Again!

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 25th, 2008
It seems like every few months I hear from listeners of "The Howard Stern Show" about how they heard the interview I did a while back in which I was the brunt of their jokes, as I blogged about first here and then again here. At this point, I've lost track of the number of times people -- mostly cool guys -- have written to me after the segment aired -- it must have run easily three, four, five (?) times. It's all very amusing. Anyhow, I just received a wonderful e-mail from John, a Howard Stern fan in British...

Have you started using Twitter? If you're a fan of Twittter already -- or if you're not -- I invite you (as I did previously) to learn about this wildly popular social networking phenomenon on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. Eastern on a special panel on my Gab With the Gurus Radio Show. In case you're in the dark, Twitter is the microblogging service which helps you stay connected with your friends, loved ones and co–workers by posting quick remarks -- always less than 140 characters --which answer the simple question, "What are you doing?" It's also one hot...

No-Brainer Non-Workouts for City Slickers: Tone Up With House Work, Errands & Boogying In Front of the Computer

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 23rd, 2008
Let's face it: Any activity is better than none, especially in our sedentary society. Granted, our ancestors didn't need to hang out at a gym. They just ran for long stretches in search of their dinner (animals), then chopped wood on which to cook their meals and stay warm or climbed trees for berries, etc. Since millions of us are city bound by choice, it can be a challenge for us to regularly swing an axe or sledgehammer or pick up rocks, logs and cinder blocks, as the Guam-based, Zen Habits blogger Leo Babauta suggests. (Would that I had some...

Dining Out Without Food Fretting

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on September 18th, 2008
You know frustrating it can be to go to dinner and hope that the waiter will convey your instructions to the chef to please skip the sugar, artificial sweeteners, salt, nuts, dairy or whatever ingredient your body just can't handle? Well, I'm thrilled to learn that Sloane Miller -- a.k.a. "Allergic Girl" in blog circles -- is making things easier for people like us by organizing Worry-Free Dinners. Although she began in New York in April, she's set her sights on holding events in the rest of the country. Clearly, immediately, I have to contact Sloane and join forces with...
