Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on May 28th, 2008
As if fried Twinkies and fried candy bars aren't enough. Now, Deep-Fried Coca Cola is apparently is all the rage at state fairs in Texas, North Carolina and Arizona. The sugary, fatty dish -- which made its debut at the State Fair of Texas in 2006 -- even won the "Most Creative" title that year. Today, as I was cleaning my office, I ran across the recipe, which a fan of mine sent to me. As I examine the ingredients list, I'm aghast: White flour, eggs, Coca Cola and Cola Cola syrup, plus whipped cream and cherries. Yuck! I'm feeling...

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on May 26th, 2008
Note from Connie: Yet another study comes to conclusions that demonstrate how important it it to quit eating junk and to start exercising. Jennifer brings you the details. Research just published in The Lancet indicates that lifestyle changes -- exercise and improved diet -- may delay the onset of diabetes for several years. From 1986 until 1992, 577 Chinese adults with impaired glucose tolerance were assigned to either change their diet, get more exercise, make both dietary and exercise changes, or to a control group in which they didn't follow any diet or exercise program. Researchers then assessed all the...

Eating Delectable Desserts for Work? Reporter Puts Herself in Sugar Shock for a Story!

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on May 25th, 2008
You've gotta admire the boldly honest comments and the self-deprecating humor of this Canada East reporter Laverne Stewart, who boldly went where some of us never would these days! She pigged out on sweets -- all for the sake of a story! And good for her for owning up to the short-lived joy of a sugar high. Kind of interesting how she writes here way out of her sugar low. (Good therapy!) Anyhow, maybe back in the old sugar-obsessed days -- as in pre-1998, the year I kicked sugar -- I might have tackled such a self-destructive assignment, but not...

Why Did Company Put Sucrose In Its Organic Baby Forumla?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on May 21st, 2008
Note from Connie: It's bad enough to always be on the alert for sugar in adult foods, but now baby foods have sugar added. Talk about disappointing news! Kudos to Julia Moskin of The New York Times for dishing the sour scoop about this. Jennifer Moore gives you more details. Buyer beware: Just because something is labeled organic doesn't automatically make it the best thing for a person's health. Case in point: Similac, a leading baby formula company, sweetens its line of organic formula with sugar derived from evaporated cane juice, according to an eye-opening article by Julia Moskin of...
