Trans Fat Linked to Higher Breast Cancer Risk, Study Says

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on April 12th, 2008
Note from Connie: If you're a female and are eating large amounts of processed foods that still contain those dangerous trans fats, you should read this scary item from my researcher Jennifer Moore. Higher levels of trans fats in the blood are associated with higher risk of breast cancer in women, according to a team of European researchers who published their findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology. "A high serum level of trans-monounsaturated fatty acids, presumably reflecting a high intake of industrially processed foods, is probably one factor contributing to increased risk of invasive breast cancer in women," they...

FDA: Foods Containing High Fructose Corn Syrup Shouldn’t Be Called “Natural”

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on April 12th, 2008
Citing synthetic "fixing agents" used to manufacture it, an FDA official in charge of product evaluation and labeling said that "we would object to the use of the term 'natural' on a product containing HFCS," according to Lorraine Heller of FoodNavigator-USA.com. This could be good news for people trying to eat well if it means that more food corporations will back off from labeling HFCS-sweetened foods as "natural," as Cadbury Schweppes and Kraft have already done. Health blogger Rebecca Scritchfield provided the tip about this development.

Will Rising Food Prices Cause People to Eat Healthier?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on April 12th, 2008
Will people eat better foods if the prices for junk food go up? Michael Pollan, author of bestsellers The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food, hopes so, according to Kim Severson of The New York Times. As grain and fossil fuel prices go up, ingredients that depend on them like high fructose corn syrup will get more costly too, Severenson points out. So things like soda will probably get pricier, making fewer people decide to buy them. The theory goes that consumers would then turn more often to locally grown fruits and vegetables, which Severson says haven't gotten more...

Genetically Engineered Sugar (”Franken-Sugar) Hits Stores This Year. Why?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on April 10th, 2008
"Franken-sugar" -- or genetically engineered sugar -- will make its way to stores this year, alerts Citizens for Health. So much for claims made in 2001 by Hershey's, M&M Mars, and American Crystal Sugar that they wouldn't use genetically engineered sugar. "But now that sugar beets are close to being planted commercially, they have made no such assurances," the citizens group bemoans. Isn't it bad enough that Americans are over-dosing on regular sugar? Now companies want to get genetically engineered sugar into the marketplace, too? This is cause for alarm, Citizens for Health warns. "Unlike traditional breeding, genetic engineering creates...

Obesity & Diabetes: Rates Spike in New York City

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on April 9th, 2008
Note from Connie: This is horrifying. Whatever happened to New Yorkers being more fit because of walking so much? Jennifer Moore brings you some sad news for the Big Apple. Rates of obesity and diabetes are growing much faster in New York City than in the country as a whole, according to research by the city's health department, which was published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease. Obesity and diabetes rates in New York shot up 17% between 2002 and 2004, while the national obesity rate increased by 6% and the incidence of diabetes nationwide didn't increase significantly in that...

Sugar Addiction: It Doesn’t Exist, Psychologist Claims. Oh, Really?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on April 5th, 2008
Montclair State University psychologist Debra A. Zellner, Ph.D. told a group of reporters at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., at a conference called "Understanding Sweetness," that research suggests people don't actually become physiologically dependent on sweets. So reports the allegedly not-addicted-to-Nutella editor Katherine Hobson, who tipped us off to this fascinating conference in U.S. News & World Report. In fact, Hobson points out, Dr. Zellner argues that instead people condition themselves to crave certain treats under certain circumstances. Oh really? People don't get addicted to sweets and refined carbs? Not according to experts I interviewed for my book...
