“Sugar Dust Explosion” Kills 6, Injures More, At Imperial Sugar Co. Refinery Near Savannah, Georgia — What Does Sugar Dust Do to Our Bodies?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 9th, 2008
How tragic! Six people died and 42 were injured after a sugar dust explosion at Imperial Sugar Co.'s sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, near Savannah, Georgia, Bloomberg reported. The culprit? Sugar dust. That's right, sugar dust in a "silo" -- where refined sugar is stored before being packaged -- "likely ignited like gunpowder," reported the AP's Ross Bynum, attributing Imperial Sugar Co. president and CEO John Sheptor. "Now, what does that say about our favorite little `treat'?" wondered Karen, who is a member of my Break Free to Soar With Glee program. This incident certainly gives one pause about...

Diabetes Study Partly Stopped After Unexpected Deaths. What Happened?

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on February 8th, 2008
High blood sugar can puts diabetics at risk for several serious problems -- kidney disease, blindness, nerve damage, even the loss of a leg or foot. So the lower a diabetic's blood sugar is, the better off she'd be, right? Not necessarily. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) had to stop part of a major diabetes and heart disease study because 257 of its subjects, who had been given the most intensive drug and insulin treatment to lower blood glucose, died. By contrast, only 203 of the study participants, who followed a less-intensive treatment regimen and thus had...

Western Diet High in Processed Foods & Meats Triggers Metabolic Syndrome

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 8th, 2008
We've learned about this before, but yet another new study now reveals the connection between eating a Western diet -- high in processed foods (think carbs and sugars) and meats -- and developing metabolic syndrome. Thanks to foodproductiondaily.com for tipping me off to this new research, which involved scientists from the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina following 9,514 subjects for nine years. During that time, 3,782 cases of MetS experienced an increase in metabolic syndrome. As head researcher Pamela Lutsey and her co-workers wrote in Circulation, "Consumption of a Western dietary pattern was adversely associated with...

SUGAR SHOCK! Mentioned in Delicious Living Magazine, Etc.

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 7th, 2008
It's a busy in-the-media limelight time for SUGAR SHOCK! Another story -- this one from sugar fan Kelli Rosen -- just came out in Delicious Living in which both Stephen T. Sinatra, contributing author for the book, and I were cited. This morning, I also had a fun, light-hearted interview this morning with WAZO-FM, the top-40 radio station in Wilmington, NC. In addition, last week, I went to Philadelphia to be taped for a segment on the "Seeking Solutions With Suzanne" show, where Suzanne Roberts interviewed me. As described on the site, "Seeking Solutions With Suzanne" consists of "both a...

SUGAR SHOCK! Cited in Numerous McClatchy Newspapers, Thanks to Joan Obra of the Fresno Bee

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 7th, 2008
SUGAR SHOCK! has been featured in a number of newspapers around the country, thanks to Joan Obra of the Fresno Bee, a McClatchy Newspaper. As I noted in this post on this SUGAR SHOCK! Blog, on January 15, Joan wrote an article about alternative sweeteners, entitled "The sweet life: Sugar substitutes are more plentiful than ever, but don't overdo them." Joan quoted me several times in her story, which also included this photo and caption below. Then, as Google has been alerting me, after Joan's article ran, it was picked up by a number of other McClatchy Newspapers, including the...

Make Your Valentine’s Day Sweeter & More Romantic By Offering Heartfelt Gifts (Article)

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 6th, 2008
Hope you enjoy the following article that I wrote, which is appearing on various websites. Make Your Valentine's Day Sweeter & More Romantic By Offering Heartfelt Gifts By Connie Bennett, C.H.H.C. Every Valentine's Day, I’m saddened, because men all across America are unknowingly putting their honeys into sugar shock by lavishing them with super-sweet chocolate candies, placed, of course, in beautiful, red, heart-shaped boxes. Of course, that gesture is intentioned and intended to show these significant others that they're cherished, adored and beloved. But this annual sugary ritual is one that sends women into diet frustration, chocolate fixation and agonized...

Super Bowl Star Endorses Sugary Oreos, and Mike Adams Doesn’t Like It

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Jennifer Moore on February 6th, 2008
While I was busy spending the day dashing back and forth to Philadelphia for a taping of the popular Comcast TV show, "Seeking Solutions With Suzanne" -- which you'll hear more about later -- my research assistant and blog contributor Jennifer Moore came up with this item about another athlete pushing sugary foods. What gives with these ball players? Can't they find something more healthy to promote? Here's Jennifer's post: The ever-provocative Mike Adams, editor of the informative, opinionated health website NewsTarget, recently wrote an article that takes another celebrity sugar-endorser to task. You see, Adams -- whom Connie interviewed...
