Trans Fat: They’ve Mostly Taken A Hike, But Consumers Still Need to Read Food Labels

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 19th, 2008
The trans fatty acids (trans fats) were supposed to take a hike. Turns out that's not totally true. You see, we just learned, thanks to researchers at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis reporting in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, the nasty substance still lurks in some foods. The good news is that researchers, who examined a sampling of processed snack foods, cookies, butter, and margarines sold at retail giant Wal-Mart in Minneapolis-St. Paul, found that most of them are now free of trans fats, which have been known to raise "bad" LDL cholesterol, which puts you at...

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 18th, 2008
Did you hear that beginning March 31, all chain restaurants in New York City will have to prominently post calorie data on their menus? About 54 percent of adults in New York City are overweight or obese. The new regulation applies to restaurants with 15 or more outlets nationwide – or about 10% of all New York City restaurants. This move has the backing of a number...

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 14th, 2008
Isn't this tragic? A week after the deadly Feb. 7 sugar refinery explosion in Georgia, the obstinate fire is still burning, the AP reported today. What more, the death toll at the Imperial Sugar Plant Co. has now climbed to eight. The AP explained that dozens of fireworkers weren't enough. "Local crews had to call in a specialized team with powerful equipment to assault the silo fires, where thick masses of molten sugar were still smoldering even after a helicopter dumped thousands of gallons of water." As if sugar isn't bad enough when you over-consume it (as I reveal in...

Posted in Diabetes Articles by Connie Bennett on February 9th, 2008
How tragic! Six people died and 42 were injured after a sugar dust explosion at Imperial Sugar Co.'s sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia, near Savannah, Georgia, Bloomberg reported. The culprit? Sugar dust. That's right, sugar dust in a "silo" -- where refined sugar is stored before being packaged -- "likely ignited like gunpowder," reported the AP's Ross Bynum, attributing Imperial Sugar Co. president and CEO John Sheptor. "Now, what does that say about our favorite little `treat'?" wondered Karen, who is a member of my Break Free to Soar With Glee program. This incident certainly gives one pause about...
