Product Description
As the global epidemic of diabetes continues to expand, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is predicted to double in the next 20 years. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: An Evidence-Based Approach to Practical Management addresses this problem by expertly synthesizing the currently available evidence regarding specific issues in diabetes care. Written by an interdisciplinary team of scientists and medical professionals and comprising a wealth of information in a single resource, the book integrates the best evidence for the full range of clinical issues surrounding the evaluation and treatment of type 2 diabetes, including comorbid conditions such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and vascular disease. To quantify the strength of evidence supporting current practices, each chapter highlights related conditions, including fatty liver disease, pregnancy, and polycystic ovarian syndrome, and also addresses barriers to treatment, including stress, depression, and patient motivation.

“In The African American Guide to Diabetes, Constance Brown-Riggs very effectively demonstrates an important Health Power principle, namely the importance of Different Strokes for Different Folks . She shares a wealth of information about diabetes that has been specifically tailored for African Americans, in a down to earth fashion, and emphasizes the important interrelationships of spiritual health, mental health, and physical health, in Living Well with Diabetes. This book is a valuable resource for African Americans with diabetes, and for their family members and friends, whose increased understanding of diabetes will help to increase their support of those affected.“
Norma J. Goodwin, M.D., Founder, President and CEO, Health Power for Minorities (Health Power)
“Connie Brown-RiggsÂ’s…culturally appropriate messages are an extraordinary benefit to African-Americans, particularly women, who are often not fully aware of the lifestyle changes they can and should make to prevent diabetes and improve their health and that of their families.”
Wendy C. Brawley, publisher and CEO, IMARA Woman magazine
“This book provides cutting-edge information on diet, exercise, and medication, synthesized with other aspects of diabetes care, including spirituality-providing a total lifestyle wellness plan. I support this book with high enthusiasm.”
Wahida Karmally, DrPH, RD, CDE, associate research scientist, Director of Nutrition, Irving Institute of Clinical and Translational Research, Columbia University
More than 4 million African-Americans have diabetes; thousands more have pre-diabetes or are at risk for the condition. But in 21 years as a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, Constance Brown-Riggs found few books that even vaguely addressed the unique health concerns of this population.
This comprehensive guide includes:
The latest medical treatments for diabetes-medications, insulin therapies, blood glucose monitors, plus the pros and cons of supplements, herbs, and alternative diets.
What you canÂ’t eat– and what you can.
Dozens of mouthwatering Caribbean and soul food recipes, with a two-week menu plan.

We all know that lifestyle changes can prevent heart disease, but how many of us know that incorporating small changes into our daily life can substantially lessen our risk for getting type 2 diabetes? Twenty million Americans are at risk for this type of diabetes (also known as adult onset diabetes). This book aims to be “the guide for all of us interested in living without this disease.” First, What You Can Do to Prevent Diabetes takes you through the steps for getting ready to make a change, planning your goals and the action steps for reaching them, dealing with lapses, and celebrating successes. Then the authors focus on the specific keys to avoiding type 2 diabetes: managing your weight, getting active, and building healthier eating habits. Simple, practical tips include the “80/20 Rule” (“If 80 percent of the time you make healthful food choices, the other 20 percent of the time can fall through the cracks without adversely affecting your health”) and the “Strive for Five” goal (aim for five servings of fruits and vegetables each day). A nice touch is the “Simple Changes Journal” at the end of every section, where you write down some changes you can make today, this week, and this month to get closer to your goals. This is a slim book and not very comprehensive–the authors explore just the essentials that you need to take your first steps towards making a change. –Joan Price

Product Description
From the Western scientific perspective, diabetes mellitus is an inherited endocrine disorder characterized by a variable degree of carbohydrate intolerance and specific vascular lesions (i.e., thickening of the capillary basement membrane.) The endocrine aspect of this disease is the lack of sufficient pancreatic insulin to take up nutrients from the blood, in particular, glucose. The short term danger would then be a sort of tissue starvation leading to rapid fat metabolism leading to ketoacidosis and ultimately to metabolic acidosis, shock and death. The long term dangers involve vascular lesions beginning in the lower extremities and fundus of the eye leading to tissue death, loss of sight and limb amputation. In the short term, immediate symptoms include thirst, hunger and frequent urination. Type I (more severe) diabetes often has juvenile onset whereas Type II (milder more manageable) forms of diabetes have an adult onset. Some adults (and now more children) very commonly develop Type II diabetes due to obesity. In some cases they have enough blood insulin for a normal body habitus, but insufficient insulin for an enlarged body habitus. For these individuals weight loss and exercise would be a part of their recovery and disease management..
This formula’s goal is to improve uptake of nutrients in the presence of limited insulin, to stimulate the body to produce insulin more efficiently, and to improve circulation and oxygenation in the peripheral tissues (fundus of the eye and extremities). It’s TCM function is to nourish the Yin and Moist Essence, promote Blood circulation, remove Blood stasis, clear the Heat and tonify the Qi.
